My great-grandfather, Ole O. Grandsen was born on August 26, 1857. When searching the database should I use year born 1857 (0 years +or-) or (1 year +or-)? The census does not state what time of the year it was taken?

The census was taken Dec. 31, 1865 - but the people should give their age as it would be on their next birthdate: 1 year old means born between Jan. 1, 1865 and Dec. 31, 1865 etc. When you make searches you should perhaps use 9 years +/- 1 or 2.

Then the search function doesn't seem to work properly. You don't get any hits by entering a birth year of 1865 +/- 0 years. Similarly, 1864 +/- 0 years, results in hits on persons of the age of 1 only.

We have have it one year wrong. As you probably all have seen, the year of birth is not given, it had to be calculated. I'll have a look at it next time we make new indexes. Since ages are not very accurate in any case, I do not see it as a real problem. You should in any case use+/- 2 og 3 years.
