If anyone happens to be researching BAPTISMS in Oslo for the years 1894 - 1897, I would be interested in receiving copies (or information) for 2 children of Nicoline Antonette Eugenia f. Westby (Fredriksen) and her husband Glasmester Martinius JOHANSEN/Johannessen known to have lived at Storgata/Storgaden 10A in Oslo between the years 1882-1896, maybe later. [Nicoline's maiden name has been recorded as WESTBY(e) and FREDRIKSEN (her foster parent's name) and sometimes both names are used]1). CARRIE (maybe Karen) ELIDA born October 7, 1894.2). FRITHJOF STUB born August 26, 1896.I don't know in what parish or church Carrie and Frithjof were baptised. Nicoline and Martinius had 6 children. The first 2 children (Margit and Aslaug) were baptised at Domkirke in 1883 and 1890. Ernst was baptised at Kvinneklinikken on Feb 18, 1893. The last child - Carl Eilert Rolf (born Oct 22, 1898) was baptised at Kampen Kirke on June 24, 1900.I believe there were other children born to Martinius and Nicoline between the years 1883 and 1893 other than Aslaug (born Dec 9, 1889, baptised May 30, 1890). Information about any other children would also be appreciated. Thanks, Pearl

The Johansen family lived at Aagebergv 20 (today called Åkebergveien) south of Kampen Kirke at the time when Carl Eilert Rolf was baptized. My guess is that Carrie/Karen and Frithjof were either baptized at Oslo Domkirke or Kampen Kirke, but I have no way of knowing that.I would especially like to know about Carrie's baptism records, as then I would know if she was baptized as Carrie Elida or if "Carrie" was just a nickname that she used all her life. Tor, You could be right, as Carrie seems to be the Americanized version of Kari or Karen. When the family arrived at New York in July 1900, this little girl was recorded as Karen. As an emigrant from Oslo on the 29th of June, she (#23222) was recorded as a boy named Karl. A mistake in the records somewhere. That makes me think her name started with a "K".Her name was changed to Carrie after arriving in the USA, as 1903 school records show her name to be Carrie - the name she used for the rest of her life. Hi Pearl! After what I can see, the churchrecords for christenings in Oslo DOmkirke are not available after 1892. Maybe someone is going to the National Archives (Riksarkivet), to see if the original churchbook is to be seen there. I am not going there until after easter myself. Hope you and yours are doing good! Laila

Hi there! If I don't find out anything before you go to Riksarkivet and you have time, I would be happy if you could look this up for me. Thanks again, Pearl

Hi Laila, I'll be in touch with you in April. If you don't find their baptism records in the Domkirken records, then that will eliminate one church from the list. Take care, Pearl

The books from Domkirken are still down there at the churc, in use (?!), after 100 years! But it seems that nothing was to be found there either. Nothing in Kampen. What about Jacob church? But the Norwegian name of Carrie Elida IS Karen Elida, you find that in the Communal Census (Kommunal Folketelling) of Christiania 1899. I have sent you a mail about it.

Not Jacob. I checked from the birthdate (a few months before) and through 1896 for Karen Elida. Nope. Nothing.... Laila

Per Håkon, did you check out Kvinneklinikken? Another thing, you found them in the Census 1899, could you put it here too? (since we are several interested people....) Laila

Per Håkon, Nice work! Now, we know "Karen" was her given name. Here is what Per recently found:In Adressebogen 1898 we find that Glasmester Martinius Johansen has his shop at Stor Gd 24Sb-0 (Storgata 24 Sidebuilding floor zero, i.e. basement). Private address: LakkeGd 58 4th floor. In Adressebogen 1899 we find his shop at StorGd 12 2.floor, and they live in Lakkegata 58 1st floor, so they have moved down to the ground. In Adressebogen 1900 the shop has the same address, but they live at AakebgVn 22, 2nd floor. In the communal FT1899 (31st dec) in Åkebergveien 22, a four floor house with 8 flats, 6 flats (4 three-roomers and 2 one-roomers) occupied, plus 2 where no-one is living at the moment, we find the following family on the second floor:Martinius Johansen b 1848 in Aker, Nicoline do (i.e. ditto- the same, i.e. Johansen) b 1858 Christiania (sic), Margit do. b 1883 do (i.e. Christiania), Aslaug Sigfrida b 1889 do., Ernst Rolf b 1893 do., Karen Elida b 1894 do., Fridtjof Stub b 1896 do., Carl Eilert Rolf b 1898 d.Now that Domkirke, Kampen and Jacob are eliminated, what other churches are possible places for their baptisms?? Kvinneklinikken? Any others??

Hi Laila, from the link "Kredsinddelingen med Alfabetisk Gadefortegnelse" at your neat website, it looks like "Lakkegata 58" might be in Grønlands district. Is there a church by that name, too? Thanks and Happy Valentine's Day, Pearl

Hi Pearl, and Happy Valentine's Day to you too! Yes, Grønland Kirke exists. In fact, that church kept me awake every sunday for years! I lived just across the street. My family lived in Lakkegata 20 around 1890 btw. I don't remember if I have any churchrecords for Grønland for that timeperiod at home, I will check it out after 6 tonite. Laila

Hi Laila, I guess you were unable to find the elusive Frithjof and 'Karen' in the Grønland Church records. It is hard for me to write Karen, when I knew her as 'Aunt Carrie' all my life. However, I am now 99% sure that her name was Karen, since her name was recorded that way in 2 documents.I am sure Frithjof and Karen must have been baptized, but where? I don't think the family would have left for America without having 2 of the children baptized. Carl Eilert, the youngest, was over a year old when he was baptized - just 5 days before leaving Norway. If the other 2 had not been baptized by then, then surely they would have been done at the same time...........Thank you for all your efforts in looking for these baptisms. Best regards, Pearl

Hi Pearl! I know I put it out here, but, when they made the new user-interface here, my message must have been cut out or something. I found that my records from Grønland were not from the actual time period!!!! Well. I am now preparing. Under 20 days till I 'll put myself in the body-barbeque! paradize...here I come! Remember to send me an e-mail when I get home... laila

Thank you so much, Laila, for persistently searching for these records for me. I was really happy to receive the following email from you this morning - “I found both Fritjof and KAREN Elida!!! They were, as I suggested, born in the Fødselsstiftelsen.” That’s great! Now I have the proof I needed - that my Aunt Carrie’s name was Karen. Frithjof and Karen’s baptism records are the last 2 pieces to the family puzzle that I really wanted to find. I am very grateful to all who have answered my questions in this forum, especially Per Håkon, Tor Kenneth and Laila. They have solved many “mysteries“ in my family. With all the information and help I‘ve received, I can now piece together the story of my father’s family in Norway and trace my roots back to the early 1500s.Takke du veldig mye, Pearl
