So=sjø= sea.Someone who came the seaway/ or he could be a sailor.

Hi Carl, As NIna say So(e) = Sea, but add the English verb to fare meaning to travel, ie a sailor as Hans says. Mvh Vidar

If you know the place along the Norwegian coast the person – the 'sofarende' – lived, this may also tell you the kind of ship he had his work on.In the 1865 census (and other sources of that age) 'sofarende' (also spelt soefarende, søfarende, søefarende etc.) very often is a member of the crew on a ”jekt” (as good old ”Pauline” and the newly built ”Brødrene”) – a traditional sail freighter along the coast.At least in my home area, the Trøndelag coast, this seems to have been the situation.A ”sofarende” could be the owner of the ship, but in most cases he was not.
