Eg takkar so mykje på førehand for alle gode tips! I sent an invitation to the tree in question. As an introduction, the area of the research is on Highway 101. In theory the road runs from San Diego into Oregon in the Coast ranges. In practice the part of the highway running north of San Francisco, is not great highway as it runs through narrow river valleys from the Russian River to the Smith River near Crescent City. It follows each river as it runs north, then runs through rugged mountains until if finds another river to follow. It's beautiful country but for Eureka only being 300 miles north of San Francisco, it's shortened it's journey to only six hours since 2010 when they finally bypassed a part that was only gravel. When I was a girl it took the better part of 12 hours. In many places the road is narrowed by old growth forest on both sides, but there are also areas so close to the rivers that they flood every time heavy rainfall occurs and others that are prone to land and rock slides. In 1890 they hadn't built a railroad (since abandoned) so if you were going by land it was a three day stagecoach ride. Most people who went from San Francisco to Eureka did it by ship along with most of the goods for sale in the whole area. Mostly the area was supported by lumber harvesting and milling. Eureka was a thriving town but the areas around were what was left after all the trees were removed. The banks in Eureka decided to sell some of that land which couldn't be sold to anyone in California. It was too remote. It was served by ship and by a three day journey by stagecoach...if the weather cooperated. So they turned to Europe. They turned to some dissatisfied farmers from a cluster of villages around Njemegian and Arnheim. First and foremost these were Catholic and solidly middle class. They felt they were second class citizens because vital records were recorded by the Protestants. The land agents in Europe told the prospective colonists that their household goods (down to clothes) were old fashioned and should be sold. They all bought passage on the Maasdam. One family, the Groenenbooms was in second class. Everyone else was in steerage. They landed in New York and made their way across the US by train, then to Eureka by coastal packet. There's a news story about how all the Eurekans came out to watch the Dutch land, like it was a parade in September 1890. They had sunk most of the money they had into land none of them had seen in the steep hills and valley now only an hour south of Eureka. My cousin's maternal grandmother was the first baby born in the new Dutch Colony called 'Fruitland'. The immediately set work clearing stumps from the clear cut, planting trees and building drying yards. In 1893 they lost the leader of their colony when he tried to cross a river in flood. By 1900 the land had been foreclosed on. Some of the families went to work in the lumber industry, others into dairies and cheese making. When the time came for the children to start marrying, there were few choices. There were almost no other Dutch except their own colony. Most married other Catholics, mostly Italians, Swiss and Slavs. The next generation didn't even marry Catholics but did marry other Californians who were first, second or third generations from Europe. The couple I was asking about had a son, Oscar who married Marie Bush (originally Van den Busch), the daughter of one of the Fruitland colonists. In trying to track down Oscar, I got involved in figuring out all the Olsens in Humboldt county...who came from everywhere in Northern Europe. I hit pay-dirt when I found Oscar's parents marriage record as it gave father's names of both parties and where they were born. I would be nice if they'd been more particular about Johanna. Godkveld .
