[#17917] Obituaries, Chicago 1940 and 1948

Is it possible to find an obituary in Chicago from 1940? There is a Betsy K. Christiansen who died in Chicago 1 Aug 1940. She probably is the wife of my grandfather's brother. If she is the right person, she is born in Aug 1871, according to the 1900 census. They had a son Olaf (and another called Melvin), and I notice that there is an Olaf Christiansen who died 10 Oct 1948. I would be very interested in his obituary as well

Leif, hvis bror til din bestefar het Martin f.1867, (63 i 1930)emigrert 1886/88 så bodde han med kone Betsy f. ca.1873 /57 i 1930) begge f. i Norge, med sønnen Melvin f.i Illinois 1895.Census 1930 Chicaco. Olaf så jeg ikke noe til.

Takk for svar, Hans.

Well, i've asked someone to do an online lookup, she found Betsy, Melvin, and Olaf...but that Olaf is from another family. I will look at film for the 10-2-1944 Martin in the IL index. Writing to Irving Park cemetery in Chicago could produce more details than the office will share with me, as i am not related in any manner..i can forward these obits if given an email address; it seems Olaf died before Betsy as he is not mentioned..(or--perhaps--there is some problem within the family) Her cert says born aug 4 1870--according to Melvin; she has a brother Herman; Melvin died 1959, married 1 child; 2 g-children; and may have been a builder; was a Medinah CC member (Mason). Roger.

Thank you! I really appreciate your effort! The right Olaf may very well have died early, as I cannot find him neither in the 1920 nor in the 1930 census (neither can I find Melvin in 1920).Martin died sometimes during the fifties or early sixties. My grandfather wrote an article in 1965 about his childhood, and he mentions that he visited his four brothers in Chicago in 1952. In 1965 all but one of them were dead (the one still living in 1965 was not Martin). My email address is, leiferik.nilsen@hjemme.no.

Bare for å oppdatere, så har jeg nå, med god hjelp av Roger Thauland, funnet Melvin og hans etterkommere. Melvin hadde sønnen Walter, f. 1918, d. 1987. Walter igjen hadde to sønner. Den ene døde i 1985, men den andre lever. Han har jeg nå vært i kontakt med. Martin døde forøvrig i 1953. Jeg vet fortsatt ikke når Olaf døde.
