(190:) I received yesterday by normal post from Landsarkivet i Härnösand, Sweden, a scanned copy of the 18 pages long sentence in Ljusdals Häradsrätt of Nov 25th 1889, sentencing Per A. Nermo (born in Trysil, Norway in 1843) to 10 months of hard labour.The handwriting is neat and tidy and the copy quality is almost perfect, but I'm still having a hard time reading/transscribing the contents, as I'm quite unused to this, and as it's of course written in a rather old-fasioned Swedish language, which is rather far from my mother tongue. So far I havent't even located the part describing which criminal act he was sentenced for ...I've asked Mr Göran Gullbro at the archives what would would be the cost for them to transscribe the contents of the sentence. (My guess is it'll be in the range of SEK 100-150 per page)Meanwhile, I can offer to those interested a PDF file comprising the scanned sentence. Just give me your e-mail address, and I'll submit it.

Being Swedish I may be able to at least get the general meaning of the documents so that we know why he was sentenced and the circumstances around it. My Norwegian writing is on a child´s stage but we need it in English anyway. Usually the whole text in these court annotations is not important, there are a lot of surrounding comments. Received - very interesting. It may take some time to do the whole thing which has all the detailed witness statements etc, it is a verbatim transcipt of the trial.It also contains a small biography: (Birthdate and parents) He lived with his father until he was twenty where he had some schooling, then he left for Sweden where he worked in the forests in Borgsjö parish. He moved to Hedsjö in 1875 or 75 and has been without steady employment since then. His wife died 19 February and left 4 children of which the eldest daughter is now married. He has been registered as living in Ramsjö since 1888, was able to read and write and had full citizen´s rights and had never been charged with a crime or punished for a criminal offence. He had reasonable knowledge of Christianity according to a certificate from the vicar.

I´ll do it and make it into a cliffhanger novel here. But here is the crime:He was charged with stealing goods worth 1259 kronor and 26 öre (a very big sum of money then) from a shop through breaking and entering. Two others were involved. There is a detailed description of every item.He was sent to Gävle prison, there are probably prison records still in the archives. I will have a look. If you are really lucky there are photographs, but there should be descriptions of his behaviour etc. I have one ancestor I have a picture of and he was a criminal.

(209/211:) The amount of SEK per page estimated by me in #203 would be for a transscription (from the original handwritten court records into a Swedish text file), not a translation into English. But is sounds to me from what Chris is saying that we are being lucky here, for he has so far not mentioned any fee pending for his work with the translation of the trial 'tidbits'. I think we're looking at an eventfult and 'hair-erecting' week-end here !

According to the emigrant database they paid about 200 kroner in 1880-90. A common workers´s pay in 1890 was 2 kronor 40 öre per day (12 hours). Probably less in the forestry business in the north.

Thus, Per could travel to Amerika and back 3 tour/retour trips for the 1200 kroner worth of goods that he stole. He would have had to work appr. 525 working days to earn the amount. Must've seemed to him conceptually a good idea at the time, though proving eventually to be a rather unsuccesful enterprise (as he was nicked).

Nermo (born 1843) would probably have been in the rolls for 'Østerdalske kompani' as a private (menig) soldier for example from appr. 1862 (the year after he was 'confirmed' to his christianity) until he he left for Sweden in 1866. (If the 'rolls' end in 1853, I'd be surprised to find Per there, as he was 10 years old at the time).

The census records in (#3) appears to have been taken in 1892 (is that correct, Anne Lene ?) (1886-1892 Hedsjø, Ramsjø, Gävleborgs län page 97), and Per A. Nermo seems at the time to have finished his 10 months of hard labour inprisonment (in Gävle). It's in this census record that the note regarding his sentence of 25/11-1889 was first found (by Anne Lene Hagen).Anne Lene refers (in #4) also to the 1890 census (Hedsjø, Ramsjø, Gävleborgs län), where Per A. and his sons Per, Lars Martin and Jonas Alfred are mentioned.In #4, however, one important information detail is ommitted or overlooked: the fact that Per A. is mentioned as ''fånge'' (prisoner), under 'Övrigt' (Other). His profession is recorded as ''f. In the CD version of the 1890 census (#4) the word 'fånge' (prisoner) is omitted but it appears in the on-line version. Unfortunately the 1890 is the only one where you cannot link to the original, hand-written record to see if there are mis-spellings or transcription errors. Nermo is an un-Swedish náme so it would have been prone to errors. The birth parish for the two youngest sons is also wrong and confusing. The information in the central census was taken on November 1, 1890 from the church 'household census' which was the book where all parishoners were listed by village or farm, the purpose of this was originally to register the yearly, compulsory christianity examination. The household census can contain all kinds of interesting information, such as convictions and personal information and comments by the vicar. It also has information on literacy and vaccination.
