I am so so sorry ladies and gentlemen, I just couldn't help but burst out laughing when I was reading the list of items stolen by Per A. and his two compatriots. Sounds like they were grabbing left and right, at every thing in sight.....and probably dropping some of the loot on the way out the door. I wonder who the ring-leader of this rather vagabond group of desperados, was? You all know I am hoping it wasn't good ol' Per.He sure did get himself into a pickle...I'm glad he got some sense knocked into him and didn't live a life of crime after, he got out of the slammer. It was probably a good thing he got caught , before he made it a way of life! Any mention of how he got caughtKeep it coming, Fellas and LassesArnie P.

A sneak preview:Per Nermo confessed, the other two did not so they had to go through another trial. The two others were: Shopkeeper Johan Jönsson and Worker Hans Johan Lindgren. Per blamed Johan Jönsson for instigating the raid 'after plying them with aquavit and other imbibing'.Per had an unusually light sentence for those days.

(222:) After today's e-mail dialog with Anne Lene Hagen, I shall have to modify the impression given i #222 regarding the chronology of the 'houshold cencus' referred in (#3) compared to the one in 1890 census (#4).The census records in (#3) appears to have been registered in (late) 1889 (1886-1892 Hedsjø, Ramsjø, Gävleborgs län page 97), and Per A. Nermo seems to have very recently received his 10 months of hard labour inprisonment sentence (of Nov 25th 1889). Maybe he did not yet enter the 'slammer' in Gävle.Anyways, in the 1890 census (#4) he's registered as a prisoner. By 1891 he'd again be a free man, hopefully with the best of intentions for his new start in North America (where he seems to have somewhat modified the rendition of the circumstances surrounding his recent past in Hälsingland ....)

... or, the (#3) household census may possibly have been written somewhat earlier in 1889, at the time shortly after the family officially moved to Hedsjö (Ramsjö) (18/1-1889). The following notes will then have had to be entered at a later point in time :His son Arne Valerius (b. 29/1-1889)'s death (1/2-1889)The death of his wife Kajsa Lisa (19/2-1889)His son Lars Marin (b. 13/1-1873)'s ''confirmation'' (14/4-1889) and emigration to America (19/8-1892)His daughter Katarina (b. 20/4-1875)'s confirmation (14/4-1889, same day as LM) and death (30/9-1889) (by eating poisonous ''Nightshade berries'')Per's sentence (25/11-1889) (for breaking, entering and theft in Okt 1889)His son Per (b. 18/3-1871)'s emigration to America (21/5-1891).By the way, what would be the Swedish and Norwegian equivalent of ''Poisonous Nightshade Berries'' ?

In Sweden it is Belladonna, latin Atropa Belladonna. It contains atropin, a nerve poison that reduces muscle cramp through inhibiting nerve signals. It is called belladonna (italian: beautiful lady) because ladies in the 1700s used drops in their eyes to look wide eyed with big black pupils (look at old porttraits!). It is now used in examination of the eyes. Also in surgery to relax the muscles so it is possible to make incisions. The whole plant is poisonous and actually related to the potato and tomato.

Nattskatta innehåller solanin, samma gift som i potatis som växt oven mark.(Discussion on the various types of nightshade here, apparently black nightshade is another plant which contains solanin as the poison, how anyone could eat it is beyond me. The flora claims it is not as poisonous as other members of this plant family, berries are pickled in some countries and eaten as capers)

Just a thought: If Katarina was not familiar with these plants since they are unusual, she may have been just hungry. We eat a lot of berries especially in the north and seeing the poor state of her family´s finances, she may have eaten the berries by mistake thinking they were edible like most berries in Sweden.

Chris (229): Helt utrolig! Denne Hans Johan Lindgren som var med på innbruddet var veldig sannsynlig bror av min oldefar - se her hva jeg har notert om ham: 'Källa PU 1890. Nr 91 torsdagen 7 augusti 1890. Uppgift angående frigivning av straffångar. Lindgren Hans Johan arbetare, född 04.10.1850 i Stöde socken. Hemort Stöde. 1:a res stöld med inbrott. Förlustig medborgligt förtroende t.o.m. 30.08.1893. Intagningsdag 20.12.1889. Frigivningsdag 30.08.1890. Besparad arbetsförtjänst och egna medel 11:52. Länsfängelset i Gävle.'

Re: (#229)Per was a social drinker, known to enjoy a drink or two, as was his son Louis (my grandfather), although they wouldn't be considered alcoholics. Also, if Per got a light prison sentence, can you give an idea of what a regular sentence might be for this crime? What did the other two culprits get? Did they get heavier sentences for not admitting their guilt and forcing a longer trial ?Regards,Arnie

According to #239, Hans Johan Lindgren (born 1850) was in the slammer at Gävle from 20/12-1889 (Merry Christmas !) until 30/08-1890, which would be eight months. Additonally he had been sentenced to renunciation of society reliance as a citizen (förlustig medborgligt förtroende) until 30/08-1893. He was sentenced for breaking, entering and stealing, as was Per A. Nermo, his culprit.Hans may have received a harder punishment than Per, as he did not confess and had to go through a second trial. But maybe they behaved well in prison and were paroled ...

Amazing - #239! here is Hans Johan´s own biography which he had to deliver to the court at his hearing:Hans Johan Lindgren, his own story about his background:He was born the 4th of October 1850 in Stöde parish, Medelpad and son of torpare (crofter) Hans Lindgren and his wife Kristina Lindgren who were still alive and living in Stöde. His parents lived for 6 years in Offerdal, Jämtland County, where Lindgren had schooling. He was able to read and also write a little but had not been confirmed in church. After his parents moved back to Stöde he lived with them without any proper work. He was still registered in Stöde but since the early 1870s he had been in the border forests between Hälsingland and Medelpad, sometimes in Korpåsen in Hassela parish and sometimes in Sunnåsen in Borgsjö parish working in various forestry businesses. He was unmarried and had citizen´s rights. He had never before been accused of or punished for a crime. The prosecutor explained that he had not been able to obtain a vicar´s certificate for Lindgren even though he had written to the vicar in Stöde as well as the vicar in Hassela parishes and that Lindgren probably was registered elsewhere. To this Lindgren answered that he was still registered in Stöde and that the confusion probably was caused by him asking for a “banns” certificate (note: certificate to get married) a few years ago from the pastor in Stöde when he intended to marry a girl in Hassela. The move was never made.(Later, the prosecutor was ordered to find his papers for the next trial)

Is the house still in use?I will translate more from the court protocol when I get the time. Lindgren also gives testimony. It really is an amazing coincidence!I have ordered the Polisunderrätteler (PU, Police Bulletin) from the University library which has almost everything printed the last 200 years. Nobody had touched it since 1890 so they will get it from the caves sometime next week. Then I can see if Per Nermo´s release notice is there. He is not in the on-line database of prisoners, only those who got more than one year are there. Pity, because it has photographs.
