Charlotte M. Karastes, 96SPRING VALLEY - Charlotte Marcelia Karastes, age 96, of Woodville died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at Park View Home, Woodville.She was born Nov. 11, 1902, the daughter of Nels and Annie (Iverson) Olson in Cady Township, St. Croix County. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley and presently a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Woodville.On Dec. 28, 1921, she married Joseph Karastes. They had one son, LaVerne 'Bud.' They farmed in Cady Township north of Spring Valley until 1969. They retired and moved to Woodville. She worked at Park View Home in the housekeeping department from 1969 until 1981. She continued to live in Woodville and was a resident of Park View for the past two years.Survivors include: her son, LaVerne 'Bud' Karastes and his wife Betty of Hayward; two sisters, Doris Timm of Woodville and Mildred Jacobson of Minneapolis; one brother, Leonard Olson of Spring Valley; three grandchildren, Don (Nancy) Karastes of New Richmond, Becky Karastes and friend Steve Kromrey of Clear Lake and Kay (Robert) Hovde of Baldwin; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.Be Preceding her in death were: her parents; her husband Joe, who died in 1977; three sisters, Connie Lund, Nina Lunde and Nurlene Snoyer; and three brothers, Maynard, Walter and Virgil.Visitation was held Sunday at Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley. Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 16, at Zion Lutheran Church, Woodville. Rev. Penny Holste and Rev. Ralph Thompson officiated the service. Music was provided by organist Elaine Jacobson and vocalist John Terkelsen. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Woodville. Bearers were: her great-grandchildren, Kelley Eicher, Kate Eicher, Joel Karastes, David Karastes, Duane Hovde and Steven Hovde.Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley, handled arrangements.

Betty Lou Karastes, 85 Oct. 27, 1923 - Sept. 29, 2009 Image Oct. 27, 1923 - Sept. 29, 2009Betty KarastesBetty Lou Karastes, age 85, of Woodville, Wis., died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at Park View Home in Woodville.Betty was born Oct. 27, 1923, the daughter of Michael and Ella (Jones) Mathison in Eau Galle Township, St. Croix County, Wis. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Woodville.Betty grew up in Eau Galle Township and attended Brookville Country School. She graduated from Woodville High School in 1942. On August 18, 1949, Betty married LaVerne 'Bud' Karastes at Zion Lutheran. They were blessed with three children: Becky, Don, and Kay. Betty was a loving farmwife who worked hard on the farm alongside her husband Bud. They farmed in Cady Township and later in New Richmond. When Bud and Betty retired they spent many happy years at their home on Moose Lake, near Hayward, Wis.Besides working on the farm, Betty worked as a housekeeper in Eau Claire, worked at the Woodville Grocery Store and at Duffy's Cleaners in Spring Valley and also worked for Carl Soika's Restaurant in Hersey. After their dairy herd was sold, Betty worked at the Famers Union in New Richmond and at Countryside Vet Clinic in Star Prairie. Betty always kept busy and was active in church, the homemakers, and was a 4-H Leader. After retirement her family became aware of her hidden artistic ability as she took up oil painting. She created many beautiful landscape prints.Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband LaVerne 'Bud'; brother Don Mathison; and sister-in-law Gladys Mathison.Survivors include her three children, Becky Karastes and Stephen Kromrey of Clear Lake, Don (Nancy) Karastes of New Richmond, and Kay (Bob) Hovde of Baldwin; nine grandchildren; one great grandson; many other relatives and friends.Visitation was on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Woodville. Funeral service was at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at Zion Lutheran with Rev. Keith Anderson officiating. Organist was Judy Albrightson and special music was provided by Bob and Steve Hovde.
