I understand that you might be able to help regarding look up's in Aftenposten.

Would it be possible to have a look and see if there are any details of Petter Olsen who drowned in Akerselven on the 21st June 1919 ,

4 days after his Anna Marie Antonsen had died ,leaving  6 children.

In the information that i have it is mentioned that it would be "Skifte No 70"

Glenn, what source do you have that states Petter Olsen drowned?

On the June 21. 1919 there is an entry under "Reported Deaths" of a road worker, Petter Olsen, 44 years of age.

I cannot find any specific article that mentions any drowning in Akerselven in that edition, nor in the next few editions the following week. However, right next to the list of reported deaths on June 21. there is a minor notice regarding a story that seems to match up with Petter.

It states, roughly translated:

"Died of heartbreak.

A man from Sagene was set to escort his wife to her grave yesterday.

On the way to the cemetery he began to feel ill. People had to take care of him, but his condition continued to deteriorate. While his wife was buried, he was sent to Ankerløkkens morgue.

His grief had killed him."

There is no mention of name or anything that could shed more light on the story, but considering what you said about Petter's wife dying a few days prior, could this be him?

Looking at editions up to June 27. I could not find an obituary for Petter. There may be several reasons, for example: no immediate family, listed in another paper, or simply no obituary as it was not necessarily a given that you'd have an obituary in those days.

Typically it has been possible to search on NB.no in editions of Aftenposten and other newspapers up to approximately 1921, but for some reason this does not seem to work anymore. It would have been helpful in this case as the search engine on that site is much more accurate than Aftenposten's own.

Perhaps some of the other helpers here could assist in trawling the editions after June 21. for mention of the supposed.

I have problems interpreting the old handwriting, but it seems like it says that he drowned in the Akerselven.

Hi Alexander,

The only information I have is from the above sources that Torbjorn has kindly provided the links for.

I again have problems interpreting the handwritting and asked for help in another forum "Tyding av skannede kilder"

Many thanks for the help. Would it be possible to scan and send the article ?

From page #3. The article (left) and the registered death notices (right).

For those who may follow this thread, I paste the link to the interpretation from "Tyding av skannede kilder".

I wonder if the newspaper has maybe spared the readers the full story, as it doesn't really mention

how he died. (Apart from suddenly taking unwell and dying of a broken heart )

I know that newspapers have a habit of embelishing stories and maybe that is what has happened here.

I was hoping that the newspaper article might have cleared up this family mystery once and for all, however the article has helped to muddy the waters somewhat.

Again, many thanks for all your help, it has certainly been an eye opener.

Those were my thoughts as well, Glenn.

We have no sure way of knowing for sure that the story of the man dying of a broken heart was really Petter, but I suspect that might be the case. If it is Petter, and the drowning was perhaps a consequence of him wanting to commit suicide out of grief, then it is not really all that surprising that the paper opted put a different spin on it.

Mvh

Her er Thorolfs: http://glasoe.org/div/aviser/alsaker27071982.jpg

God påske! :)
