Vennlig hilsen Leiv

Hello Leif,

I have just found you on the internet from this link:

http://leskjerv.seria.no/aner/0003/4170.htm, ......Jenny Hatleset........wow!!

My name is Tamara Berthelson and am writing to you from California, USA.

I have been doing genealogy for only 3 years, promted by the birth of my first grandson.

I'm astounded by your research. I think Jenny Hatleset is part of a family connection I have been trying to make in Norway.

My husband's family-paternal and maternal come from Norway. We don't know any norwegian. Google translation is wonderful

Jenny Hatleset's mother, Inga Hauka, is one of three children of Annanias Teodar Johannassen Hauka Urdal & Anna Samsondtr Urdal who immigrated to the USA in 1905 from Bergen to New York. and on to Illinois.

State side Andrew Johnson, Anna Johnson and the 3 children: Elmer Johnson, Jenny Johnson, and Inga Johnson.

Jenny and Elmer stayed here and Anna (widowed) and Inga went back to Norway- Eijkenford. Jenny might be my husband's grandmother.

Grandparents he never knew.

I've been recreating this family genealogy with very little information. Jenny's tree here has not been done. Between the internet and some photos/letters documentation has been slow. So you see finding your information is a real miracle .

This may or may not be right...may not be the right family at all....norwegian nameing is very confusing to me.

I feel I'm in the dark without a flash light!

Do you offer help or services ? Maybe you can offer direction? Either way your information has helped me in so many ways and for

that I can't thank you enough!!! You are my Angel!! Just thought you needed to know....

Warmest regards and many blessings to you, Tamara Berthelson

http://digitalarkive...1&merk=211#ovre

Flott at Ken tilbyr å sende svar :-)

Greetings!

I’m am overwhelmed with your speedy responses and willingness to help! I cannot thank you enough! Thank you, thank you, Leiv Skjerve and Ken V. Nordberg your help will always be remembered!

As Ken V. Nordberg suggested here’s background information:

Goals:

To establish the genealogy and blood lines for my husband’s father’s paternal and maternal family in Norway. To establish and reconnect with current family in Norway.

Maternal

Here is the 1910 US Census for Chicago… the beginning of my Norwegian discovery:

https://familysearch...M9.1.1/MK86-7X6

I do know from families here, that family from Norway traveled a lot back and forth to the USA sometimes through Canada. Maternal side, there was a Fred Jacobsen (b. Norway) in Chicago, Illinois, that married an Aunt of Jennie Johnson. Possibly M1-Rakel D. Jonsen- Dorthea Johnson or M2- Ann Berthilla Johnson Olson? He may have been married three times? ! Lots of Tillie and Tillas in this family as well as Annas and Jennies! Confusing at times!

https://familysearch...M9.1.1/MSQP-R73

This same Fred Jacobsen , I think, is the one listed as destination on this Ellis Island Ship manifest, 1905 for Annasias and family. His address matches the one on several US censuses. Name Urdal also matches the same last name of Mother Anna on Jennie Johnson’s death certificate. I believe this Ellis Island goes along with the emigration list from Digitalarkivet. ( have been spending lots of hours on this site!!) I still question the information I find that looks like it matches-names are always different….help?

http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipManifest.asp?MID=04146385720915623808&FNM=ANNA&LNM=URDAL&PLNM=URDAL&first_kind=1&last_kind=0&RF=2&pID=102400040361&

Then I found Leiv Skjerve genealogy online with a Jennie Hatleset, daughter of Olav and Inga Hatleset sister to Arvid and Kare , I’m hoping they are the ones in my family letters.

http://leskjerv.seria.no/aner/0003/4170.htm

Letters from Norway :

30 Jan 1927 To Mandus from “ Tilla” one of two wives of Fred Jacobsen Chicago, Illinois, USA. In Norwegian

29 Jan 1928 To Mandus from Inga Johnsen, Livresund, Flors, Norway. In Norwegian

10 Feb 1929 To Mandus from Inga Johnsen, Livresund, Flors, Norway. In Norwegian

13 Mar 1932 To Mandus from Inga Johnsen, Livresund, Flors, Norway. In Norwegian, translated by Ken V. Nordberg

Mentions: Elmer and wife, “Tillie”.Inga’s pending wedding to a farmer’s son who will inherit farm.

Difficulties without parents or siblings.

1 Dec 1935 To Elmer & Tillie from Inga Hatleset. In English. Mentions Olav and two children, Kare and Arvid. Talks about neighbors back in Noway that where with the family in Chicago, Illinois,USA. Mentions Elmer & Tillie’s son Earl.

12 Oct 1976 To Margaret Genevieve Berthelson from Inga & Olav Hatleset, 6940 Eikenfjord, Flors, Norway

Christmas card in English. Requesting Margaret visit Norway. Mentions daughter Tordis, & 11 grandchildren.

27 Dec 1977 To Margaret Genevieve Berthelson from living family, Eikenfjord, Flors, Norway. In English.

Introducing herself as cousin. Tells of Inga’s death 25 Dec 1976.Death of brother Arvid-42, 4 Apr 1977. Tells of a husband and four children.

Photos

Photo with two small boys, about 5& 3- back says Kare & Arvid.

Online, I have found a family in Eikefjord that might be our relatives. I do not have their permission as yet so I’m respecting their privacy. Maybe finally I could find “primary sources” for my conclusions. As well, what is considered a primary source in Norway? Parish registers? Census? How does one find family stories to put flesh on these bones?

Also from family I know Jennie Johnson had a brother Elmer S. Johnson and a sister, Inga Johnson. Elmer and Jennie stayed stateside and Inga returned to Norway with mother Anna. Stateside there were fires and hurricanes that destroyed houses. Leaving very little behind to recreate legacies of family most of us never knew. We know nothing of the Norwegian names, farms cemetaries, life events except of those mention in the attached family letters. Maybe the information we need is here but not knowing Norwegian who can tell?

Any direction or information is greatly appreciated, Tamara Berthelson

Sorry to have sent wrong information. My husband's greatgrandmother Anna Johnson had a daughter Jennie Johnson ( Grandmother), Elmer S. Johnson ( Great Uncle) and Inga Johnson ( Great Aunt). Inga Johnson married Olav Hatleset and had a daughter Jennie Hatleset- this Jennie I hope is Jennie Endestad from Eikefjord. I have letters from a Jennie Endestad, Eikefjord. Thank you so much for your help, Tamara

Looking at the information you mention from the family letters, there can be no doubt that you are related to Jenny E. in Eikefjord.

I agree that the emigration records in Norway and the arrival records at Ellis Island match up perfectly. So at least we have the family when they leave Norway May 2nd 1905, and when they arrive at Ellis Island May 17th 1905. In both sources Annanias and Anna traveled with their three children Jenny, Hjalmar and Inga.

Departure (courtesy of Torbjørn): http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=9&filnamn=EMIBERG&gardpostnr=54683&merk=54683#ovre

And their arrival at Ellis Island (courtesy of Tamara): http://www.ellisisland.org/search/viewTextManifest.asp?MID=04146385720915623808&FNM=ANNA&LNM=URDAL&PLNM=URDAL&first_kind=1&last_kind=0&RF=2&pID=102400040361

It is also clear that this is the same family that Torbjørn mentions in post #5.

It is the daughter Jenny then (mentioned in all three contexts above) who is likely the sister of the Inga Haukå who is listed on Leiv's website as the mother of Jenny Hatleset.

So basically what we are hoping to find here are primary sources to connect that Jenny which leaves Norway for the U.S. with her parents in 1905 with that Jenny, daughter of Anne Johnson mentioned in Tamara's post #16.

I haven't seen the 1910 census records myself, but while the children's ages agree perfectly with the other records above, Anne is listed as a 46 year old widow which is off by some 14 years compared to the Norwegian departure record, off by 4 years from the Ellis Island records and off 3 years compared to the Norwegian marriage records. The 14 year discrepancy could possibly be a transcription typo and the latter two aren't hopelessly off. The name Anne Johnson (and the name Andrew Johnson) are a bit puzzling, but I guess it is not totally inconceivable that Annanias Johannesen could be Americanized to Andrew Johnson.

As we know there are sometimes mistakes in ages, etc on census records because of who is reporting as well as who is taking info. On Jennie Johnson's death certificate, the informant was husband Mandus. In his grief he could have made a mistake or "Andrew" was a nick name. My 1910 US Census could be wrong.....I agree with you and that is why I need help in finding primary sources.

Med vennlig hilsen, Tamara Berthelson
