Reider G Carstensen

Birth: 1906 Death: 1983 trans.gif

Reider G Carstensen of Southold died at Cental Suffolk Hospital in Riverhead Jan 5. He was 76.

Born Sept 6, 1906 in Bergen, Norway, Mr Carstensen came to Southold in 1926. He attended the Columbia University School of Architecture and then returned to Southold to become a general contractor. He constructed the Custer Institute observatory and was a charter member of that institution. Later, he volunteered his services to design the meeting hall addition to the Southold Presbyterian Church.

During World War II, Mr Carstensen worked as an aircraft design engineer, continuing in that field until his retirement. He was a member of the Bell Aircraft Co design team that built the Bell XP59, the first jet-powered US aircraft, and the Bell X1, the first piloted aircraft to fly faster than the speed of sound.

Mr Carstensen, who was a self-taught engineer, held many patents in the aircraft design field, including one on a mechanism for mounting jet engines that has become the standard of the industry.

He was predeceased by his wife Valborg. He is survived by two sons, Reider Kreg of Charlotte, NC, and Peter of Darnestown, PA; a sister Liv Saymer of Riverhead; 5 grandchildren and 11 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Jan 8 at the DeFriest Funeral Home in Southold. Interment was in Presbyterian cemetery in Southold.

Obit published in The Suffolk Times on Jan 13, 1983 p10.
