Information regarding Halvor Michelsen Abelsted - Elen Pedersdatter Wang in Oslo 1840's

Arne Mikal Mikkelsen

I am looking for information on the family of my oldefar Herman Marcus Julius Halvorsen born 1842 in Christiania. His parents were unwed. They were Halvor Mikkelsen Abelsted and Elen Pedersdatter Wang.

I have Herman’s christening record: Oslo Domkirke/ vår Freslers menighet, Parish Record official 1837-1845. Page 369-370 entry no 304.

I found a Hermand Halvors. In the 1865 census for Oslo he is listed as a smedelærling [blacksmith’s apprentice. [i don’t know if this is him].

In the 1875 census in Visgnæs [1147 Avaldsnæs] he is listed as Julius H. Kallevig with his wife, two children and his mother-in-law. He is a miner working in the copper mine.

In 1899 he died in Lillesund, Skåre his death record is recorded in the: Avaldsnes/Avaldsnes Ministerialbok 1880-1906 pg 282.

I would really like to find information on Halvor Michelsen Abelsted and Elen Pedersdatter Wang. So far I have not found any information on them other than what is in Herman’s christening record. I know that the Abelsted family is well documented but I cannot find the connection to Halvor Michelsen [Mikkelsen?]

In the 1865 census for Oslo I did find one Halvor Mickels. Skomager 54 years Fødestad: Bøe i Telemark. In Herman’s christening his father listed as a book binder. I suppose it isn’t much different to change trades from Bookbinder to shoemaker? As for Elen I have found nothing as the name is too common.

I know in the 1900 census for [Skaare 1153, Rogaland] the family is also listed as Kallevig, but I have not found the connection to that farm.

I do not know what took Herman from Oslo to Avalsnæs. Any information on Halvor, Elen or Herman would be very much appriciated.

Tusen takk Arne

If anyone has any suggestions on what I should do now to find any more information on Halvor and Elen and their families please let me know. I have run out of ideas and these two people represent 25% of my family tree that I do not know anything about :( !

Thank you in advance.

Her father is from Førland in Tysvær.

May be her mother was married to Kallevig. (Widow in 1875-census)

Åsbjørg and Berit,

Tusen takk for all your hard work. Thank you for your information. :)

Janna Marie was my bestemor who died 1918 in the Spanish Flu epidemic in Brooklyn, NY. Her sister Anna Lovise married Janna's husband Peder Johannes Mikkelsen my bestefar in Brooklyn in 1920. Peder's father died in Innbjoa in 1921 and Lovise and took herself and Peder's three children; Arne Mikal [my father] and his two sisters Evelyn and Christine [Jenny] back to Innbjoa in 1922. She also took her brother Karl Juliussen to Innbjoa as well. Janna's other sister Tilla {TanteTilly}, looked after Janna & Peder's children in Brooklyn from 1918-1920. Tante Tilly looked after me as well in Staten Island,NY after my father died in 1950 and my mother had to work. Peder Johannes died in NY in 1928 in an explosion on a boat.

My father left Norway in 1931. His sister Jenny left Norway in 1935 and died in Staten Island in 1992. Tante Evelyn stayed in Norway and died in 1995. I know what happened to Anne Kristine Paulsdatter and all her children. I hope that I can find information on the parents of Herman Markus Julius Halvorsen - Elen Pedersdatter Wang and Halvor Mikkelsen Abelsted.

Takk for alt

Åsbjørg and Berit,

Where is Kallevig? I have tried to find it on a map.

I know Herman [Julius] & Anne lived in Visnes in Avaldnes after their children were born and where Herman worked in the koper mine.

There is nobody left in my family who knows anything about Herman's family.

Takk again.

Arne
