Help with research and family locations

Thanks for the help.  I was able to find a usable copy of the records I need for my reference library.  It is nice to see the original document, even if it is a struggle to read it.  I will get help from the local Sons of Norway group.

By the way, you are correct, Family Search does not have images of Norwegian church books on Family Search.  They give the film number and with that you can order them.  My process is to search Ancestry first for U.S. records and collect as much documented information as possible.  Documented is the key word.  Then I go to Family Search and repeat the process.  Next I go to the country of origin and do as much research as I can, again looking for original documentation.  My last step is to return to Ancestry and look at Public Family Trees.  This can be scary, since most of the trees are undocumented.  In this case I found a tree that matched with my research subject and was pretty well documented.  The only problem was that his documents were to small to keep as part of my collection, but he did list the URN:NBN numbers.  I hope that explains why I wanted access to the originals in the fashion I did.

Thanks,

Jim Kelly

PS  If any of the folks on this forum need help with U.S. searches, just let me know.

The URN:NBN reference is very uncommon. I did not understand why you asked for that.  I didn't even understand what it ment. It's more like a reference to a tertiary form of infomation while you have both the first-hand and second-hand information available. I don't recommend that.

If you want transcriptions, I suggest you use the group "tyding av skannede kilder" ("interpretation of scanned sources").

Best regards,

Stian

I have got a PM from a forum member. She told me that it is possible to get to the scanned church book from a page/image, if you put "?visbok=ja" after "jpg" in the URL. I have tried, and it worked for me too. I can't guarantee that this will work in the future, but it is worth a try, I think. :)

No you can't.  It is no search in this records at all. But of course, you can make URL if you have what you call URN-NBN numbers.

Look at this reference to a page:

Kildeinformasjon: Oslo fylke, Oslo Hospital / Gamlebyen, Ministerialbok nr. 1 (1734-1818), Ekteviede 1799-1802, side 168.
Permanent sidelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7401&idx_id=7401&uid=ny&idx_side=-173
Permanent bildelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20061010010401.jpg
The first line is information about book/page.

The second line is what you need to find the record (!).

The last line is only URL for an image file.

If you have "URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20061010010401" you can put "http://www.arkivverket.no/ in front and ".jpg" last and paste into your browser, and you will get the image. But it is no way to go from the image to the record (second line).

The reference URL you need is in the second line.

The first line is the correct reference that will "never" change, it is the direct reference to the church book page regardless of presentation method, but it is no internet reference.

(I have never seen images for norwegian church books on FamilySearch)
