I believe it is a griffon (the fantasy animal), the crossing of a lion and an eagle.

It was in my grandfather’s personal collection. He was born in Norway so I assumed it was something special related to his heritage?

This looks like a fine work of embroidery. To me the depicted coat of arms resembles the Norwegian national Coat of arms - i.e. Den norske Løve/"The Norwegian Lion" even if an important item is missing; the halberd or axe. The reason for this might have been that this possibly is a miniature version which would make it somewhat harder to also include the halberd ?

I am not sure what kind of animal this is, but in my opinion it is definetely not a griffin or a lion with an axe, as "The Norwegian Lion". It seems to me rather to be a shield with a a bend and across the bend a rampant wolf or a dog. The heraldic colours (tinctures) are silver shield, red bordure (?) and bend with black outline, and black animal with red outline.  May be this is an embroidery made for a scouts group?

Do you know when scout groups were started in Norway Hans Canppelen?  My grandfather was born in 1909, not sure if they were around yet?

The scout groups was started in Norway 25. mars 1911 . For girls it started in 1921

No known norwegian military emblems matches either. And no ‹paramilitary› from WW2. (The NS and affiliated organisations, who most certainly would not be using a crown . . .)
