Tollof Thoreson born 1840 - 1842

We are looking for information on my husband's maternal great grandfather, Tollof Thoreson born between 1840 to 1842. He was married to Olia Halverson on 18 May 1871 in Wisconsin, United States. So he emigrated to the US prior to 1871. We have his birth date as 21 April, but do not have proof of that date. We also do not know where in Norway he was born.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Even if the 1865 census does not say Tollef is the son of Thore and Gunhild, I belieee he is. I see that both Helga and Gunhild is their children too.

The Tollef Thoresen that Trude found (#2) may very well be the right man. The local history Rollag bygdebok: ætt og gard og grend, by Knut Hoff, vol. 1, p. 92:

"Tollef... b. 17.6.1840, unmarried [i.e. as long as he lived in Norway]. He owned Skavlemstugo [a small farm/homestead, I suppose] and was one of the few Norwegians who participated on the Danish side in the war between Denmark and Prussia 1864–65. Emigrated to USA."

This confirms that the Tollef in in #2-3-4 emigrated to the US, unfortunately it does not give a date for his emigration.

According to this book, an older brother of his, Tore/Thore b. 1834, also emigrated to the USA, in 1865. Tore married in USA Ingebjørg Liarjordet b. 1843.

According to Rollag bygdebok - Between 1839 and 1903, 82 people from the farm Bogstrand, and the 5 farms that belonged to Bogstrand, emigrated to America.

Susan, according to the information about Tollef here:

I'm afraid the Tollef mentioned above is another man then the one you are looking for. The local history, Rollag bygdebok, also book mentions him under Stavlemsstugo (vol. II p. 220: https://www.nb.no/nbsok/nb/9d4afe1d56d570d135714fc83cd13b81?index=3#223

Sitat

That is: 1872 First Anstein Halvorsen Bogstrandeiet was the owner for 1 year, then Tollef Toresen Bogstand until 1886 when he went to America. He was among the few Norwegians who fought on the Danish side in the 1864-1865 war against Preussia.

This Tollef headed for his brother Tore's home place in Elgin, Iowa in 1887: https://digitalarkivet.no/view/8/pe00000001013139

Thus, he could impossibly have been the same man who married for the second time in Wisconsin i 1871 and according to the 1880 US Census then still lived there.
