Andreas Olsen og Aase Gulbrandsdtr.'s barn

Hei.

Mvh. Ole.

Hei Carsten. Takk for svarene.

1849 i Norge, utv. 1877.

Andrew døde 25.7.1947, Randine (Dina) døde 22.4.1954, begge i Thief River Falls, MN. Mvh. Ole.

Ann-May: Jeg skal se over alt du har lagt inn, imponerende! Tusen takk.

Her er skjema 1319:

Hei Ole.

Paul  brukte navnet Paul L. Hagen.

Hilsen Ole.

I am so sorry that I had to waste your time looking at the Aadal, Buskerud connection. That family was related to the incorrect Ole Hagen we were first searching for.

Did I give you the following information on the correct(!) Ole O. Hagen from Kari Torkelson after she did some more digging into her mother's papers? The same Ole O. Hagen that you found.

Kari says, "Andrew T. Hagen's first cousin is Ole O. Hagen.  Ole Hagen was born in Gulbransdalen, Norway.  Ole married his first cousin, Mary.  Andrew married Mary's sister, Dina."

I believe that Mary is Maria. I found in the 1885 territorial census for Polk County that Paul L Hagen and his wife Ingri have Maria age 6 and Lorence (Lorens) age 4. So I'm guessing that Maria was born about 1879. Randine was the third child and was born September 1883.

So we have cousins -- Andrew and Ole -- marrying sisters, Maria (or Mary) and Dina. And Ole and his wife Mary are also cousins.

In the 1910 census, Ole O. Hagen and Maria are living in Thief River Falls. They have been married 10 years and Ole's mother lives with them. Her name is Marit Hagen, widowed, age 62 or 67, and number of children born to her is 1. (Maybe she had only one child, maybe not.)

To help you understand how so many people moved from Polk County to Thief River Falls:
In the Old Crossing Treaty of 1863, the Indian natives ceded nearly 11 million acres to the U.S. Government (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Old_Crossing). If you look at the map on this website, you will see Grand Forks and Crookston, but no Thief River Falls. One of the counties that emerged from these ceded lands was Polk County, which included the town of Crookston (its county seat of government), and Norwegians immigrating after this 1863 treaty settled in droves in Polk County.

By 1881, a village about 20 miles east northeast from Crookston emerged: Red Lake Falls. Red Lake Falls was the site of a North West Company fur post as early as 1796 or 1797 (French Canadian) making it one of the oldest sites of European occupation in Minnesota, but it had become abandoned after the fur trade ended. Red Lake Falls was in Polk County until 1896, when residents felt that they should have their own county with Red Lake Falls being the seat of government. Red Lake County was established from about half of the eastern side of Polk County.

Around 1880, lumber was beginning to be taken from the area around Red Lake (not to be confused with the county or the city). Upper and Lower Red Lakes are in the upper middle part of Minnesota and the outlet is the Red Lake River. These wonderful white pine trees floated, so the loggers would cut trees down all winter and pile them on the frozen lake. When the lake and river thawed in the spring, they would "drive" the logs all the way to Crookston. Immigrants soon realized, however, that there was a small waterfall (very small in comparison to Norway's) further upstream and the village of St. Hilaire was started along with a sawmill there. This village was north of Red Lake Falls. Then some investors decided that the larger falls at Thief River Falls would be a better place to have a sawmill and that town was incorporated in 1896. When all three sawmills were still operating, logs were marked for Crookston, St. Hilaire and Thief RIver Falls. As they passed first through Thief River Falls, only those bearing the Thief River Falls marking were retained; the rest were sent downstream. At St. Hilaire, they were again sorted.

By 1905, Thief River Falls had become the major sawmill site and the city's population had increased dramatically. This made the city administrators think that Thief River Falls should now be the county seat of government for Red Lake County. Of course, the folks in Red Lake Falls did not want to lose that distinction -- and a battle ensured that lasted for a decade. Mysteriously, even the old courthouse at Red Lake Falls burned to the ground one night and a new beautiful courthouse was built which Red Lake Falls hoped would guarantee that their city would remain the county seat.

In 1911, Red Lake County split and Pennington County became the name of the northern half of the county with Thief River Falls as its county seat. That Red Lake Falls courthouse that was built? It was paid for through bonds that all county residents had to pay. Since Pennington County was part of Red Lake County at the time, the residents of Pennington County had to continue paying for that courthouse until the bonds were satisfied. This is why Thief River Falls did not get a new courthouse built until in the 1950s.

Because of the huge success of the sawmill in Thief River Falls, there were also two railroad lines constructed to move the lumber and immigrants who weren't having success with farming or who chose to have a different occupation moved to Thief River Falls. In one of the Thief River Falls city directories (I'm not sure of the exact year), we have two of our Hagens working for the TRF Lumber Co:  Andrew T and Ole.  Paul L Hagen ended up working for the railroad, as did Andrew and Randine's sons Adolph and Theodor.

This is probably way more than you wanted to know, but we genealogists/historians are interested in the stories.

Beste hilsen,
Faye

Hello Faye.

I placed a question at Digitalarkivet. You can see the debate here:

I think the Ole O. Hagen who was the sponsor (forlover) when Andrew and Dina got married is the Ole in 1900 Census for Polk Co., MN, born may 1872 just married to a Mary, born oct 1871, both born in Norway. Also Ole’s mother, Mary F. (or I) born May 1834, widow lives with them.
All of them shall have emigrated in 1888. In another notice I found that Mary F had been married to a Peter E. Hagen, born 1831 in Norway.
In 1910, Ole O. Hagen lives in Thief River Falls, MN with wife Maria, 30 years old, born in MN. Was this Maria Ole’s second wife?

Well, this is not easy, many Ole Hagens come up at Ancestry.com.

I can still not see that any of these people came from Hadeland.
