Agriculture crops and livestock

Recommended Posts

Marilee Wein

About a decade ago, there was a beta-version such as http://beta.digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01038361000026  for Matis Bentson

Today, it is at https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038361000018 Matis Bentson

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038361000249 Heming Paulson

I recall seeing agriculture crops and livestock for these farms. Is that information currently available?

click at the residence link, upper left, here "0002 Hatfjelddalen"

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/rural-residence/bf01038361000017

see the panel "Agricultural information"  (click the "+" if you only see the panel heading)  - seeds and livestock

(the census registered the seeds, not the crops)

Dear Ivar:

Magic! Help came so very swiftly! Thank you kindly.

Could you please direct me to a list that will explain abbreviations, such as those below.

Thanks again,

Marilee

(I am betting potato, horse and cow are among the list, but I generally lose bets)

Seeds:

by1 1/4 po1

Livestock:

he2 ku10 få9 gj3 re14.

from the scanned original, https://www.digitalarkivet.no/ft20090805360605

and the instructions  https://www.rhd.uit.no/census/ft1865.html

The seeds are by = bygg = barley;  po=poteter=potatoes, measured in "tønner" (~barrels), 1 tønne = 139 litre

The livestock: he = hest = horse; ku = "Stort Kveg" (in the original) = cattle; få= får = sheep, gj= geit = goat; re= reindeer

welcome to the forum!

This is from the 1875 census, with slightly finer accounting (cattle separated into oxen, cows ("ku") and calves/young cattle ("ka"), horses separated into

age 3 years and above ("he") and younger)

Here, they also have sv = svin = swine.

If you apply the deciphering, you will find

Livestock: "he2 ku5 ka1 fa13 sv2"   = 2 horses, 5 cows, 1 calf, 13 sheeps, 2 swine

seeds: "by 1/2 ha4 1/2 po3"   = barely 1/2  tønner (barrels), oats 4.5 tønner,   potatoes  3 tønner

Pleas note that the forum has a rule (which you accepted at registration) that we use full names.
