They married in Adams County, and lived there to about 1889 (according to their childrens birthplace). 1873 was a very short time after the first norwegian settlers came to this region. Martin Ulvestad writes a few lines about Adams County in his book "Norwegians in America" from 1907 (the few lines are enclosed). Alexander (or Hendrik) is not mentioned, but it is interesting that all the pioneers mentioned came from south-western Norway, the same area Alexander came from. Perhaps there exist more informasion about these first settlers, and there might be, in one way or another, links to Alexander and Sarah? I would have checked Historical Societys in Iowa or similar organizations. Perhaps Sarah is daughter of Andrew Anderson, mentioned as one of the first norwegians?

 

We must remember that it is not 100 % certain that Alex and Hendrik are the same person, mainly because of the contradictory immigration information.

Since there were brothers of Hendrik/the possible Alexander in Norway, would it be possible to trace their descendants to the present day? If so, it would be possible to confirm by using DNA of both possible branches of the family. This would of course depend on whether Norwegian potential relatives would agree.

Aslak (Nuns)li sounds fairly close to Alexander Lee to me - or even closer to Aelak Lee

Here is Ales Larsd and Berte Aslaksdatter in the census in 1875. At that time Ales is a widow, so her husband must have died between 1865 and 1875. As a crofter there might not have been a probate, but if we find his burial date, it might still be worth looking for a possible probate.

This may be Berte Aslaksdatter in the census in 1910. Her birthdate is given as 25 jan 1846 in Sveio, so it might be worth looking at to confirm whether it is the sister of Aslak.

If we look at the link that Ann-Mary has posted in entry #9 https://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/trees/243902/I09913/alexanderaleak-lee/individual, then Alexander's children are mentioned by their full first name. Please notice that his eldest daughter was named Bertha Ocelia og please notice Alsak's sister, who was named Berte Aaseline. This might be a coincidence, but I do post this:

Aslaks emigration is recorded in the churchbook of Sveio, given date (of departure?) April 15 1870. It seems like he traveled together with John Christian Christophersen (born March 20 1849) from the same parish.

A brief summary so far:

 

Alis/Ales Larsdaughter b. 1807 or 08 in Bergen, died in 1890 in Sveio.

Aslak Ingebrigtson (Nuns)Li,  i.e. _Lee_ in the US, (Aslaks' father) b. 1783 in Sveio; died/deceased in 1850 in Sveio.

Aslak/Aleak/Alex Aslaksons' slightly older sister Bertha Aaselina Aslaksdaughter b. 1848 in Sveio, apparently commited suicide and thus died in 1918 in Sveio by drowning herself in a fit of utter despair and insanity.

It looks like John Christian Christophersen remained in Norway, because he married in Sveio on the 26th of March, 1876 https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/7066/36966/12 Maybe he changed his mind, and did not emigrate after all (or returned, for that matter)?

 

In other words, it is unlikely that it is worth looking for him in the US to help us dentify Aslak (unless he emigrated later).

Another possible candidate:  Aslak Aslaksen born 27th September 1850 in Finnås, Hordaland county.

Parents: Aslak Ingebrigtsen and Alits Larsdatter

 

Aslak emigrated to America in April 1870 according to parish records for Sveio.

 

Finnås is a little north of Haugesund - Haugesund will be the closest town.

 

Have you got more information on his wife Sarah - date of birth, parents etc.?
