Karen Eckard Skrevet Oktober 21, 2023 Del Skrevet Oktober 21, 2023 (endret) My grandmother was born Elinor Inga Haldis (her American name was Eleanor Inga O'Connor) she was born March 1, 1910 in Bergen Norway. Her parents were Halfdan Olsen and Astrid Jakobine Olsen (Nielsen) also born in Bergen 1889. Can you please tell me why was my grandmother's last name Haldis on the church record? My family has no idea why she had that last name. Was she adopted? A step child? Born from a different father than Halfdan? Her mother Astrid Jakobine died young in her 30s in Bergen but for some unknown reason in 1921 my grandmother was separated from her father Halfdan and her siblings Alf Olai Olsen, Harry Adolf Olsen and Astrid Mary Olsen and sent to America on a ship with what we heard were friends of the family or family with the last name of Totland but her sister Astrid Mary went to Sweden but her brothers stayed behind in Bergen. Also we heard that she was legally adopted by an aunt in Provo Utah but we can't find any information . Please help me find out why her last name was Haldis at birth. Any information is appreciated. Also can you please tell me if possible if my grandmother gave birth to a son named Halfdan Andreas in 1909 and if so what happened to him? Also can you please give me any information about how or when her father Halfdan Olsen born 1889 in Bergen died? Or what happened to him? I can't find any information about him. No death records, remarriage or anything at all. Sorry for so many questions. Thank you so much. I love Norway. I wish I could be there. 😉 Endret Oktober 21, 2023 av BadGirl4Life916 Added information Lenke til kommentar Del på andre sider
Kristian_Vestli Skrevet Oktober 21, 2023 Del Skrevet Oktober 21, 2023 Her baptism record is #96 on the bottom half of this page. https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20050815030752 It shows that Elinor Inga Haldis were all her given names. Her father is painter Halfdan Olsen and the mother Astrid Jakobine Nilsen. So her last name would have been Olsen. Lenke til kommentar Del på andre sider
Kristian_Vestli Skrevet Oktober 21, 2023 Del Skrevet Oktober 21, 2023 Halfdan Andreas was born 7 March 1909 as shown on line #32 in this baptism record https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20050815030719 It also states that he was baptised at home and died before the baptism could be confirmed in church. His death and burial record is line #17 here https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061123020332 He died on 20 March and was buried 29 March. In this period the family lived in Munkelivsgaden (modern spelling Munkelivsgaten) number 1. In the records it is abbreviated to M'livsgaden. Kristian_Vestli Skrevet Oktober 21, 2023 Del Skrevet Oktober 21, 2023 Halfdan var born 17 Oct 1889 as his baptism record, line #167 shows https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061122050620 Later in life his birth date gets mixed up, as this is the family during the census in 1910 (Halfdan, Astrid and Ellinor) https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01036708033621 My best guess for his death, is this record https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/387/pc00000001391830 that shows his death to be in July 1954. My father never heard 9f my grandmas Haldis name ever. Was it her middle name? Lenke til kommentar Del på andre sider
Arkivverket - Anita Riise Skrevet November 6, 2023 Del Skrevet November 6, 2023 According to our user rules all users should be registrated with both first and last name in the display name. Here is how to change your display name: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/content/change-display-name In Norway we use the term middle name for a surname that is placed between the first name and the family name/surname, the name/names which are given in baptism are all called first name. So Elinor Inga Haldis are in Norway defined as her first names. But I guess that you in American would define Haldis as a middle name. It is very common to find old relatives with 2(or more) first name in the baptism records, though they have only used one of these names later in life.
