Jeg søker etter gravopplysninger for Ole Olsen Tangen, f/ 6.6.1822, d. 05.10.1902. Vi er på besøk i Norge i august og ønsker å finne graven hans. Vi er fra Canada. Takk!

  • Robert Jardine changed the title to Ole Olsen Tangen, Mellomgarden, Konsvinger

It comes from the Vinger Bygdebok, Bind III, Austmarka Med Varaldskog, 1977

One thing to be aware of is, he might still be there but without a marker or he might have been removed entirely.  In Norway graves get re-used, just sayin'

If I contact the Austmarka Church will they be able to tell me if his grave is visible?

And would they be able to tell me if other members of the family are buried there?

Thank you for all of your help!!

It appears that at least some of the burials at Austmarka are in Findagrave:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/209177816/ingrid-tangen

There are only 20 or so listed.  You can search here:

His grave stone does not appear to be visible.

I was not able to find your Ole Tangen (nor by the name of Ole Olsen, nor by the name Ole Nygaard/Nygård) in 'Finn grav' (Find a grave) under Austmarka. https://www.slektogdata.no/gravminner/finn-en-grav
Still, most likely he has not been removed from the place he was laid to rest. If no one pays for the grave marker to stay in place, the graves are re-used after a time, when the content of the grave are believed to be fully decomposed.

If he had descendants who stayed in the area, they may have re-used the grave for other family members. This is quite common. Graves (at least in the churchyard my family is using) are registered on the person who was last buried there.
Grave stones are only allowed to have certain dimensions nowadays, without special permits. The largest normal sized stone may have room for names and dates for 4 people.  If the same family re-uses a grave, they have several options. They may put up a grave marker for 'The X family', or simply add more names to the existing grave stone (as long as there is space), or replace a full stone with a new marker not mentioning previous 'inhabitants' - or only the names of the last few generations. As your ancestor died in 1902, is is quite likely that even if the grave was kept in the family, there would not be room for this Ole Olsen on a present stone.

The 'bygdebok' says your Ole Olsen moved in with his son Ole Olsen who lived on the farm Nygård.

The 'Finn grav' site has 25 people by the name of Tangen, and 4 by the name of Nygård.

The Nygård farm eventually went to Ole Olsen Sr. 's daughter Berthea and her husband Edvard Torkildsen. Edvard had a family connection to the farm Fagernes from which Nygård was partitioned. https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/267/pg00000002650026 https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01073714004059
This couple had a daughter Laura born 07.04.1905 according to the 1920 census. She lies buried as Laura Nygård in the Austmarka cementry. So does her brother Ole Edvard born 17.06.1895 and the brother Martin born 24.01.1900.

Thank you so much for your help Inger.

My wife will be the first member of her family to visit the family farm from which her Tangen ancestors emigrated in 1903.

If the graves aren't visible then we may pass up a visit to the Austmarka church in favour of other sights in the area.
