Thanks so much, Anton and Lars! From everything I looked up, Mathis had only four children listed, and they were all from Anna Christensdatter Gjerde, so this is quite interesting news! I so appreciate all your help, guys:)

Ok, interesting. So the kids he had with Olava Julia must have stayed back when he came to Minnesota? My great-grandmother Johanna (Jennie) was one of 4 kids -
Anna, John, Kari, and Johanna. I'll have to look into that further and see what I can find. Did you take a look at the prison stay? I can't make any of it out and am wondering what happened.

Thanks,

Stacey

No the two children both girls that were born in Norway came on the boat from Norway to Minnesota. I know we have thrown a lot of information at you but they are listed several times above on page two.

Here for example in the Minnesota State Census 1885

It is a detailed description, here is what I make out of it.

Mathis was sentenced to prison for six  months, for hitting another man with a log of wood in his head, so that he fell to the ground unconscious,  Mathis was rumoured to be a very brutal and violent person.

John used the name Martin John. According to FindAGrave he was married twice, and had at least three children. He died in 1966 in Washington.

Good find Lars. I would only have a couple of  minor corrections for Stacey Fjerkenstad. I think he was likely born in Lac Qui Parle, Minnesota, USA and on July 11.
