[#1924] Translation of terms in 1865 census

Gjest Erling Erickson

I have found my great-great grandfather's listing in the 1865 census. I have several questions about the translation of terms. (1) he is listed as a "Husmand med Jord". Does this mean he is a renter or did he own some land? (2) the crops harvested in 1865 are: rug (rye) 1/4, bygg (barley) 1/4, blandkorn (mixture) 2, and poteter (potatoes) 2. The numbers are obvious the quantity of rye, barley, mixture and potatoes harvested. Could anyone tell me what this is (bushels, metric or pounds -- any measurement will be helpful). Thanks.

Gjest Kathy Bergan Schmidt

For the measurement, one source of information is the NHDC explanation at www.rdh.uit.no/nhdc/micheal02.html. In that article, Michael Drake says "The unit of measurement was the tønne (pl. tønner) the equivalent of 4 bushels. thus po 1/2 means 2 bushels of potatoes planted. "
