Guest John Knudsen

My father is listed in Emigrants from Bergen record #79631 travelling with his mother and sister to New York. His name is noted here as (Charles) John Knudsen. To the best of all family knowledge, John is the only name by which he was ever known.I have seen last names noted in parentheses elsewhere in these registers and assumed, possibly in error, that this might refer to a farm name. What would be the purpose of writing a given name in parentheses?I have not been able to locate a listing of symbols and abbreviations particular to the emigration registers (such as those associated with the census). Thanks, JK
