[#75444] Help with place name in marriage record

Can anyone help me to figure out where Agothe Rognildsdtr was born? Here is a link to her marriage to Peder Abelsen Vigene in 1785 Kvinnherad.Permanent sidelenke: [url="http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=11553&idx_id=11553&uid=ny&idx_side=-60>LenkeIt looks like Bergmand, but I can't find a place with this name. I wonder if it's not a place but something else? Here is the couple in 1801 Fieldberg:

I read it as Bergmand too, it's probably a surname.

There are 6 people with Bergman as a surname in Bergen in 1801, but none of them have children called Rognald/Rognild. It could still be that two of them are brothers of hers. But unfortunately no Agothe/Aagothe/Agathe Bergmann is born in Bergen as far as I can see. There's a Niels Monsen Bergman who gets a son in 1762.

I think Bergmand tells that he worked in mines. There was mines in Kvinnherad at that time. Some time ago I found persons from Halsnøy in Fjelberg that used the name Bermand when they worked in the mines. When they returned to Halsnøy they changed to the name of the farm they lived on.Regards Arne.

Thank you Kjellaug & ArneIf 'Bergmand' is used for a person who worked in the mines, does that mean it was Agothe's father who took this descriptive word as his surname? Because, it looks like this word is associated with Agothe and not with her husband, Peder.I thought since they were married in Kvinnherad, that Agothe might be from there. I also looked for clues in the birth locations for their children. I know of three -- Anna confirmed 1801 @ age 17 when the family lived at Romsøe in Fjelberg -- Abel b 1791 at Flugedal (??) in Strandebarm (see Permanent sidelenke: [url="http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=11680&idx_id=11680&uid=ny&idx_side=-15>Lenke) and Brithe b 1798 at Romsøe(see Permanent sidelenke:

Maybe not of any help, but as Kjellaug points out, her father's name may be Rognald (a variation of Ragnvald?), since Rognild is a female name (in Finland children get their mother's name as a matronymicon if born ouside wedlock ('uekte'), but there is no tradition for that in Norway). There is 1 Rognild in the 1801 Census, but 104 instances of Rognald, all of them in the Western part of the country. If he is still alive in 1801, he should be 60 years plus. I have checked Rognald berg, and Rognald gru(be) (mine) with no results, but of course that was too much to hope for ...

I checked the church register for Kvinnherad in 1777, no Rognaldsen or Rognaldsdtr there.I can't find them in the church register for Strandebarm in 1787.Could Roald be a variation of Rognald (I have seen that before)? I find a Boel Roaldsdtr at Oma in 1777: Kildeinformasjon: Hordaland fylke, Strandebarm, Sjeleregister nr. (1777-1777), Sjeleregister 1777, uten sidenr. There's a probate after this Roal Olsen Linge, but I have difficulties reading it. I can't see any Agathe or her husband's name (I think), but someone could perhaps ckeck it (left side): Kildeinformasjon: Hordaland fylke, Sunnhordland sorenskriveri, Skifteprotokoll Aa 9b , 1783-1785, oppb: Statsarkivet i Bergen.Merknader: Fol. 325-638.Permanent sidelenke: [url="http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:sk_read/24035/52>http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:sk_read/24035/52Permanent bildelenke:

The other Roal (Bol's father) was a Roal Torbjørnsen Vigen, he doesn't seem to have a daughter Agathe either (only Boel and Villum): Kildeinformasjon: Hordaland fylke, Sunnhordland sorenskriveri, Skifteprotokoll Aa 7d , 1768-1773, oppb: Statsarkivet i Bergen.Merknader: Fol. 901-ut. 11) What does it say here when she was confirmed? Agaathe Rognalsdtr af Berg/Bog.. næ..? 5it's at the bottom of the left column)It's peculiar, though, that we don't find her in the church register from 1777, neither in Kvinnherad nor in Strandebarm.16) Of course Abel's father's name was not Abelsen!

Many thanks to you, Arnfrid & Kjellaug, for your efforts! If I understand all that you wrote, I gather we have no progress locating Agothe's parents... is that right? That confirmation record mentioned in (11) and (18) seems to be the right person, but like you, I cannot read the farm name. To me, it looks like 'Bergestet' or something similar. I looked through the register for 1777 and could not find Agothe. Since she was confirmed in Kvinnherad that same year, I expected to find her there.OK, about Peder Abelsen -- I understand there are two possibilities.1) The family at Gravdal that includes Abel Abelsen & Ingeri and their children Aslach (b ca 1763), Peer (b ca (1764), Abel (b ca 1768), and Brithe (b ca 1771).and2) Abel Aslaksen Flugedalen & Anne Pedersdatter Tveit, married in 1759.Both of these are interesting. Peder & Agothe's second child and maybe the first were born at Flugedal. I can't locate a birth record for Anna (b ca 1784) to verify it. It is also interesting that the family at Gravdal in 1777 shows a son Peer, who is about the right age. And in 1787, he is no longer with the family. This is consistent with the fact that by this year, he was married to Agothe.I was a little confused about this farm (Flugedal). In the 1777 register for Strandbarm, 'Fluedal' is listed right after Gravdal. But I can't find this farm in 1787. I expected that if I could find it, I might see Peder, Agothe, daughter Anna. One last comment -- in the marriage record for Peder and Agothe, he is shown as Peder Abelsen Vigene. I wondered if this is the Vikene located in Jondal.I'm not sure where to go next on this!mvh Patti

21 and 22) As Arnfrid says, we may have to go to another county (Sogn and Fjordane) - as a matter of fact, I found a girl named Agathe Rognaldsdtr there in Fjaler, but she was too young to be confirmed in 1776 (born in 1769)But I also thought of Voss where we find at least 3 men named Rognald at that period. As Arnfrid said Abel Aslaksen was first married to Anna Pedersdtr Tveit and then to Ingeri. I think Peder Abelsen came from Varaldsøy/Strandebarm. Arnfrid said he got a child out of wedlock in 1781 (see # 15 above), neither he nor the girl were confirmed yet!As to Bergv..., those were the people working at the mines in Ølve and they might come from anywhere actually!Maybe we'll find something eventually. At least Peder Abelsen should no longer be a problem, but I thought you had his forebears.mvh Kjellaug

Abel Aslaksen came from Flogedal, but lived in Eikeneset in Gravdal, Varaldsøy. He was the son of Aslak and Brita. Anne Pedersdatter came from Tveit Midtre, the daughter of Peter Engelson and Anne Torgilsdtr Leirstein.I think Rognalds wife kan have the name Birte/Berte/Brite.

24) I thought of the same name, Anrfrid and I found a couple married in Leikanger 3/7-1764 Rognald Siursen Dyvig and Brithe Pedersdtr. Traanen: Permanent sidelenke: Lenke I can't find any children for them in the immediate years after their marriage in Leikanger.Otherwise I found 4 other Rognalds in S&F, but their wives' names were not Brithe.
