Oakes, N.D.: The memorial service for Yordis O. Spear of Oakes will be 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, at Grace Lutheran Church in Oakes, with Rev. Scott Block officiating.

Burial will be in Oakes View Cemetery near Oakes.

 

Yordis Frederikka Olsen was born March 7, 1913, to Otto G. and Rika (Twite) Olsen in their farm home in Greenfield Township near Frederick, S.D. In 1919, the family moved to Frederick because of the flooding of the James River. Yordis received her elementary and high school education in Frederick Public School, graduating with the class of 1931. She attended Northern State Technical College in Aberdeen, S.D., receiving her teacher's certificate. Yordis taught in rural schools in McPherson and Brown Counties for five years. In 1937, she became employed with the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company.

Yordis was united in marriage to Wesley R. Spear on Sept. 4, 1938. They were blessed with three children: Wesley Allyn, Yordis Ethana, and Noel Jon. The couple resided in Oakes until 1943, when they moved to the home farm in Hudson Township near Oakes. In 1976, Yordis and Wes retired from farming, and moved into Oakes in 1989. In October 2007, Yordis became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society.

Yordis taught Sunday school both at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Frederick and Grace Lutheran Church in Oakes. She was a member of the ladies auxiliary at Grace Lutheran Church, and held offices at both the local and conference levels. Yordis was also a member of a homemakers club and assisted with 4-H Club. She enjoyed fancy stitching and italics printing.

Yordis passed away Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Society in Oakes at 97 years of age.

She is survived by her husband, Wesley; a son, Noel Spear of Oakes; a daughter, Ethana (John) Zumpf of Miles City, Mont.; five grandchildren: Wesley (Jen) Spear, Kandythe (Scott) Zdep, Paul (Vickie) Zumpf, Steven Zumpf and Doreen (Dave) Withee; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters: Ramona Hukari of Oregon and Betty (Percy) Peckham of Washington.

Yordis was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Wesley Allyn; and four siblings.

Born Oct. 26, 1915, in Frederick, S.D., he moved to Trinity County in 1978 from Lancaster.

He was a former supervisor for the Department of Defense at Edwards Air Force Base in Lancaster. He was a World War II Air Force veteran and was formerly a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Lancaster Post.

Survivors include wife Susan; sons Brian of Redding, Mark of Hayfork, Jerry and Terry, both of Rosamond, and Don of Lancaster; daughter Janice Brown of Platina; brothers Sigurd and Merril, both of South Dakota; sisters Eileen Dinwitte of Ohio, Cathy Witte of Portland, Ore., and Virginia Rocha and Tressa Labhart, both of Corvallis, Ore.; and 12 grandchildren.

Arrangements are being handled by McDonald-Files Chapel in Weaverville.

I am the husband of Rebecca K. Olsen, daughter of Roger Eugene Olsen, and granddaughter of Sigurd E. Olsen of Frederick, South Dakota.  I have had fits trying to research her father's family.  Roger died in 1971 when my wife was 11 and she had limited contact with her father's family.  Thank you for posting all this information.  If you can point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful.  My wife is always interested in exploring her Norwegian roots.
