Birth and Death of sisters Martine Louise Sundby(e) and Laura Emilie Sundby(e)

Recommended Posts

Tybring Hemphill

I am trying to find the dates of birth and death of two sisters Martine Louise Sundby(e) (born ca. 1851, died between 1900-1910) and Laura Emilie Sundby(e) (born ca. 1853, died between 1885-1897).  They were the daughters of Ole Larsen Sundby(e) a skraedermester of Oslo and his wife Petronelle Amundsdatter.   I have found Ole and Petronelle's other children born before 1851 and after 1853 recorded in the Oslo Domirke churchbook, but I cannot find the sisters.  I am also looking for a sensible way to narrow the date of death for these two ladies.  I understand there is some form of dødsfall list that records when people die, but I do not know where to find it, whether it is indexed and what is the earliest year it covers.  Any help is appreciated.  Tybring

Mange takk Lene.  That is very helpful.  It is always interesting to see who the god parents are, so it is great to see the church records.  The sisters were older that I had thought.  Tybring

Thank you again Lene and Sven.  My picture of this large family is now almost complete.  Interestingly, from this family of 9, I have  only found 26 descendants in my generation, which is not that high a level of reproduction as these sisters and their siblings are 4 generations removed from me.

In then 1900 census Martine is listed as Martine Sundby.  She is apparently flatmate with a woman called Regine Mathisen, in Niels Juhls gade 47.

In the address book for Kristiania (Oslo) 1902 there is a woman called miss Tina Sundby living at that same address.

Tina might be a nickname for Martine (or maybe she was called Martina?)

Found her!

Jeg finner ikke Martine/Tina/Thina i adresseboka for 1927, så hun døde sannsynligvis en gang mellom 1918 og 1826/27, hvis du vil se etter dødsannonse.

Thank you again Lene and Sven.  Your skills are amazing.  I had not thought of looking for a Tina Sundby and did not even know that there were the oslo city directories available online until I saw your posts.  I have tried to find record in a churchbook of the death/burial of Martine Sundby , but have not been able to find her in Domirke, Frogner or Uranienborg which seemed the most likely parishes given where she lived in 1918.  I also could not find record of her burial in the special Oslo website dedicated to burials under Martine or Tina.

Thank you Sven for sharing your great knowledge of genealogical research in Oslo.  I of course did not know that Johannes would be the correct parish for someone living in Adelergate in 1918 so I did not look there.  I have now learned as well about the existence of the Dodsfallsprotokoll.

Thank you Sven and Bergiverson for your help.  I have been able to trace what I think are all of the living descendants of Ole Larsen Sundby and Petronelle Amundsdatter, through 8 of their 9 children.  I was inspired by a fine photograph of the entire family taken about 1864, which you can see here.  I am now sure as a result of help in this debate, that Martine and Laura both died without any children.  I was previously able to find descendants of Herman Valentine Sundby who actually now live in Canada just like me.  However, I have been unable to determine what became of Albert Emil Sundby who was born in Oslo on Sep 25, 1842, other than that when his father Skraeddermester Ole Larsen Sundby died in 1896, his son Albert Emil Sundby was said to be in America.  He does not appear, so far as I can see, in any census from 1865 on.  Perhaps the family photograph was taken on the occasion of his departure as it was the last time the family would all be together?  I also did not find him in the list of emigrants on Digitalarkivet and cannot find him on Familysearch.  I have checked the names Albert Emil Sundby(e) as well as Albert Emil Olsen, just in case.  Does anyone have any suggestions for other sources?

A beautiful photo :)

Larsen/Larssen and Olesen are also possibilities.

Have a look at the parents names:

Could this Albert be a grandson or great grandson of Albert Emil Sundby born 1842?:

That is a good suggestion.  There are so many possibilities with the spellings.  I wonder if there would be preserved somewhere any document related to the skifte of Ole Larsen Sundby which gave his brother permission to represent him.  It seems that perhaps this is referred to here  http://arkivverket.no/URN:sk_read/34293/382/ which was located by another kind researcher in this debate:

https://forum.arkivverket.no/topic/200815-brothers-albert-emil-sundbye-and-carl-fredrik-sundbye-of-oslo/

Does it say that he is a "maler"?  Does that mean that he paints decorative paintings or that he paints houses etc.?  I believe it indicates that he has given power to his brother Axel to represent him.  That is where I wonder if more detail can be found

I discovered that there was a section of the churchbook called "Utflyttede" and have looked in Oslo Domkirke where the Sundby family were parishioners, but cannot see any sign of Albert Sundby leaving the parish in the 1860s

Lene, I have struggled to find more about the Albert E Sundby of Fairview, Alberta, Canada that you located.  I cannot find any more about him, but found that there was in this same very small town  a John Alfred Harold Sundby who is the right age to be a brother.  He had several children, one had the middle name Albert, which is not so uncommon, but one also had the name Emile, which is quite unusual.

As far as I can see, it does say "Maler Albert Emil Sundby, America".

The occupation title "maler" probably means painting houses.

I've done some more searching today, with no luck - at least so far.  But I haven't given up yet :)
