Anders Johnson (Sagen, Krogen), fødd i Hafslo 6.9.1827

gifte seg i Hafslo 14.6.1854 med

Martha Andersdotter (Grøt, Nes i Sogndal), fødd i Sogndal 26.9.1823

* Anders Aslakson, fødd i Sogndal 9.11.1848, son av Martha og Aslak Trondson Fardal

* Elisabeth, fødd i Hafslo 1855

* Kari, fødd i Hafslo 1857

* Johanna, fødd i Hafslo 23.5.1860

* Christina, fødd i Hafslo 15.12.1862

Ei dotter Andrea var fødd i 1865, men døydde same året!

FT1870 syner dei busette på ein farm i Freeman township, Crawford Co., WI: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DCY9-5QY

FT1880 syner dei busette på same farmen i Freeman township, Crawford Co., WI: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GYBF-T76

Men for å sjå korleis namni ofte vart fullstendig «vrengde» i Amerika, lat oss ta for oss desse teljingane:

FT1870:

ANDERSON, John  40  Nor

ANDERSON, Martha  39  Nor

ANDERSON, Andrew  17  Nor

ANDERSON, Caroline 12  Nor

ANDERSON, Johanna  10  WI

ANDERSON, C(hristine)  8  WI

ANDERSON, Anna  6  WI

FT1880:

JOHNSON, Andrew  53  Nor

JOHNSON, Martha  57  Nor

JOHNSON, Josie A  20  Nor

JOHNSON, Christina  17  Nor

Men kva skjedde so??  Ei bygdebok for Minnehaha Co., SD fortel oss at Andrew og Martha i 1880 flytte til Minnehaha Co., SD, men eg har notert at:

Andrew Johnson døydde i Crawford Co., WI 1.10.1884, og at

Martha Johnson døydde i Crawford Co., WI 7.6.1914.

FT1910 for Utica township, Crawford Co., WI syner at Martha Johnson då som enkje budde hjå dotteri Kari gift med John Torgerson:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GYBM-FZK

FT1905 for Utica township, Crawford Co., WI syner at Martha ogso då budde hjå denne dotteri:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DTX9-XVG

FT1900 for Franklin township, Vernon Co., WI syner at Martha Johnson då budde hjå eldste dotteri Elisabeth gift med Hans Thompson:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6SWT-J1

a. Christine Hove, f. i Oregon 3.9.1894, d. i Kirkland, Wash. 6.3.1979.  Ho gifte seg i Seattle, Wash. 22.8.1934 med John Severt Kanikeberg, f. i Skamania Co., Wash. 11.9.1894.  Han d. i Seattle, Wash. 6.9.1966.  John var målar («painter»), medan Christine var lærar («school teacher»).  Dei budde mange år i Sioux Falls, Minnehaha Co., S.D., men flytte kring 1950 til Seattle, King Co., Wash.  Dei var barnlause, men John hadde ein son frå eit tidlegare ekteskap.

Teljingi frå 1915 syner at Andrew Hove hadde butt i SD sidan 1880: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6LVH-6HV

Det same kjem fram i 1925: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-62QW-H4S

Lars—I just found this old post and wondered if you received any answers. I have done considerable family history research on the Hove brothers Andreas and Anders from Sogndal, as their sister Christine is my maternal great-grandmother. I know quite a bit of the story of Andy Hove and Martha Kjerland, their daughter Christine (later Kanikeberg) and uncle Andrew. My paternal great-grandfather was Erik Johan Eriksen Foss in Sogndal. He married another Christine Hove in America in 1888. «Hove» was not the family surname in Sogndal—the siblings who emigrated took that name in America. I have been to Sogndal 8 times to visit my Foss relatives.

Best Regards—Kurt Foss, Madison, WI

Dear Kurt!

Thank you very much for your message in regard to this very «elusive» emigrant family.

As you will have noticed, my «big challenges» have always been to figure out what happened:

*** Did Anders and Martha (Johnson) ever live in Minnehaha Co., SD?

*** What became of her son Anders Aslakson, born in Sogndal 1848 og last time mentioned in the 1870 census?  Did he migrate to Minnehaha Co., SD?  Both the 1900 and 1910 censuses suggest that only three of Martha's six children were then alive, which may indicate that Anders Aslakson had died prior to 1900, but we can find no proof of this!  Could he have been the FATHER of the niece Christine Hove, who grew up with Johanna and Anders Hove in Minnehaha Co., SD??

Here is what my manuscript of this family looks like at this time - to be published this coming fall of 2020:

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anders Johnson Sagen, frå Bakken i Kinserdalen under Urnes, var f. 6.9.1827 og gifte seg i Hafslo 14.6.1854 med Martha Andersdotter frå Grøt under Nes i Sogndal, ei dotter av husmannsdotteri Christi Eriksdotter frå Gunnildehaug under Kvam nedre i Hafslo (1784-1858), f. i Sogndal 26.9.1823.  Anders og Martha var først plassfolk i Kinserdalen under Urnes, men flytte inn som plassfolk på Sagi kring 1864 og dreiv plassen fram til 1868.
Andrew og Martha Johnson utvandra til Amerika i 1868 og slo seg ned som farmarar i Freeman township, Crawford Co., Wis. der Andrew d. 1.10.1884.  Martha Johnson d. same staden 7.6.1914.
Anders og Martha på Sagi fekk fem døtrer i lag; dessutan hadde Martha ein son frå før:
¤¤¤¤¤ (NB: Martha 1900/1910: 6 children/3 living)
 1. Anders Aslakson, son av Martha og gardbrukar Aslak Trondson på Fardal i Sogndal, var f. i Sogndal 9.11.1848,
Andrew Aslakson
¤¤¤¤¤ (American name to be verified! - Johnson? )
utvandra til Amerika med mori og stefaren i 1868 og
¤¤¤¤¤ (what became of him? – with Andrew and Martha in 1870! – biographies needed on him as well as on all of his children! – must have died prior to 1900!)
 2. Elisabeth Andersdotter (1855-1936),
Elizabeth Johnson utvandra med foreldri til Amerika i 1868 og vart der borte gift med husmannssonen Hans Thomasson frå Kvalen i Kinserdalen under Urnes i Hafslo (1849-1925) (s.d.).
 3. Kari Andersdotter (1857-1920),
Kari Johnson utvandra òg til Amerika med foreldri i 1868 og vart der borte gift med gardbrukarsonen Jan Torbjørnson frå Drevdal nordre i Luster (1851-1924) (s.d.).
 4. Johanna Andersdotter, f. 23.5.1860,
Johanna Johnson utvandra til Amerika med foreldri i 1868 og var i 1870 i teneste i Freeman township, Crawford Co., Wis. hjå gardbrukarsonen Ludvig Johannesson frå Søvde i Fortun sokn, men gifte seg i Crawford Co., Wis. 22.3.1883 med søskenbarnet Anders Christenson frå Grøt under Hove i Sogndal, i Amerika kjend som Andrew C. Hove.  Han var son av husmann Christen Espenson i Grøt og kona Gjøri Andersdotter frå Grøt og f. i Sogndal 25.2.1854, men utvandra visstnok til Amerika i 1878.  Andrew var skreddar («tailor»), men han og Johanna slo seg ned som farmarar i Edison township, Minnehaha Co., S.D.  Dei flytte som pensjonistar inn til Sioux Falls, Minnehaha Co., S.D. der Johanna d. 16.3.1912.  Andrew Hove d. same staden 28.8.1927.  Dei fekk ikkje born i lag, men fostra opp ei jente som Andrew visstnok var onkel til:
a. Christine Hove, f. i Oregon 3.9.1894, d. i Kirkland, Wash. 6.3.1979.  Ho gifte seg i Seattle, Wash. 22.8.1934 med John Severt Kanikeberg, f. i Skamania Co., Wash. 11.9.1894.  Han d. i Seattle, Wash. 6.9.1966.  John var målar («painter»), medan Christine var lærar («school teacher»).  Dei budde mange år i Sioux Falls, Minnehaha Co., S.D., men flytte kring 1950 til Seattle, King Co., Wash.  Dei var barnlause, men John hadde ein son frå eit tidlegare ekteskap.
 5. Christina Andersdotter, f. 15.12.1862,
Christine Johnson utvandra likeins med foreldri til Amerika i 1868 og gifte seg i Viroqua, Wis. 5.4.1886 med Cornelius Rasmusson frå Kandal i Gloppen, i Amerika kjend som Cornelius R. Kandall.  Han var son av gardbrukar Rasmus Antonson på Kandal midtre, opphavleg frå Skarsten, og kona Solvi Olsdotter frå Kandal midtre og f. i Gloppen 1.3.1861, men utvandra til Amerika i 1880.  Christine og Cornelius slo seg ned som farmarar i Freeman township, Crawford Co., Wis. der Christine d. 6.1.1895.  Cornelius gifte seg 22.11.1896 att i Crawford Co., Wis. med Magnhild Nilsdotter frå Djup i Innvik, i Amerika kjend som Magnhilda Dyb.  Ho var dotter av gardbrukar Nils Iverson på Djup og kona Christi Arnesdotter frå Frøisether og f. i Innvik 16.12.1873, men utvandra til Amerika i 1894.  Cornelius og Magnhilda vart buande på farmen hans i Freeman township, Crawford Co., Wis., men Cornelius d. i Viroqua, Wis. 30.6.1927.  Magnhilda Kandall d. i Prairie du Chien, Wis. 14.7.1953.  Cornelius fekk i alt fire born; av dei var desse tre frå første ekteskapet med Christine:
a. Richard C. Kandall, f. i Crawford Co., Wis. 29.6.1887, d. i La Crosse, Wis. 17.10.1958.  Richard gifte seg i Vernon Co., Wis. 5.6.1919 med Caroline Raaum, ei sonedotter av husmannssonen Torkild Hermundson frå Bakken under Råum i Luster (1828-1899).  Caroline var f. i Vernon Co., Wis. 1.3.1897 og d. i La Crosse, Wis. 25.12.1952.  Richard Kandall var bilmekanikar og snikkar («auto mechanic and carpenter»), og han og Caroline budde i Ferryville, Crawford Co., Wis.  Dei fekk ein son i lag.
b. Alfred C. Kandall, f. i Crawford Co., Wis. 8.2.1890, d. i Madison, Wis. 22.1.1954.  Alfred var bilhandlar («auto dealer») og budde i Ferryville, Crawford Co., Wis., ugift.
c. Christine C. Kandall, f. i Crawford Co., Wis. 5.1.1895, d. i Crawford Co., Wis. 27.8.1895.
 6. Andrea Andersdotter (1865-1865).
Hi Lars—I think I can fill in some blanks for you. I’ll work on pulling together what I have and send to you asap—may take some days. My focus is more on the two ‘Hove’ brothers from Sogndal, their wives, children and descendants, and in less detail, the family of Johanna Hove. I still have some missing details, which I am actively working on resolving. I have many related documents. Is it better to share them via email? Are you on Ancestry.com? Or Facebook Messenger?
Best—Kurt
Dear Kurt!
Thank you very much for your quick reply!  I am very happy to learn you may be able to fill me in on some of the blanks!
You can use e-mail, or else I am on ancestry.com.  As far as Facebook is concerned, I am «allergic» to that site...
Looking forward to more news, I remain...
Very sincerely yours,
Yes, these are some of the records I have. The father of Christine Hove is Andy Hove b1867, and Martha Kjerland Hove is Christine’s mother. But Martha vanishes from all records after the 1895 census of Marion County in Oregon—no record of divorce, death or burial that I have found. For some reason—the likely demise of Martha—Christine was sent at a very early age to live with her uncle Andrew b1854 & wife Johanna in South Dakota. She was legally adopted by her uncle in 1911, but was living with him at least by 1900, if not sooner, according to US Census. I am working with some people in Oregon to determine what happened to Martha. Andy remarried Pauline Molstad Hove and they had five children—returned to live in Oregon early in 1900, died and are buried in Silverton.
Martha Olsdatter Kjerland emigrated in 1892 from her family home in Granvin/Ulvik in Hordaland to America. The passenger list states that her destination was Minnesota. In 1891 her younger brother John Olsen Kjerland had emigrated to and settled in Minneapolis. She likely came to him initially. So far no indication how she ended up in Oregon by 1893, where she married Andy C Hove in Silverton—the very first wedding in the Trinity Lutheran Church.
The daughter Christine Hove (later Kanikeberg) was the first cousin of my grandfather—his mother was sister of Andrew and Andy Hove. I have two letters from Christine to my grandfather in the 1970s in which she explains that the siblings changed the family name to Hove after emigrating. Their birth surname is Grøt or Grødt in Sogndal—Grøt was a small farm under Hove, sometimes listed as under Nes. They changed the name because it sounded like they came from a more prosperous farm.
Martha Andersen Kjerland is not the same person. The wife of Andy Hove is Martha Olsdatter Hove from Granvin/Ulvik. I am almost certain this Martha was dead before 1900, possibly as early as 1896. In the 1915 South Dakota census, Christine is 20 years old—and it says she has been living in SD for 18 years.
Lars—I tried to find you on Ancestry to give you access to my Hove family research, but I could not locate you. I maintain the page as private while I am working on it, but hoped to be able to share it with you. I’ve followed your genealogy work for many years—highly impressed. I am pleased to be able to collaborate on this area of mutual interest.
Trinity Lutheran Church in Silverton, Marion County, Oregon, founded in 1892, published a booklet celebrating its first 50 years. It includes the fact that Andy C. Hove and Martha Kjerland (name misspelled) were the first couple married in the church in 1893. I have contacted people at the church and with a local genealogy group to help locate any records about Martha after 1895, but so far nothing has been found.
The 1865 Norway Census for Granvin, Ulvik, Hordaland lists the members of the family of Martha Kjerland, only 2 years old at the time. Her parents’ names are listed on one of the wedding documents at the Oregon church. A younger brother, John Olsen Kjerland (he used Kierland in US), was not yet born, but he emigrated to America (Minnesota) one year before Martha.
Christine Hove, daughter of Andy Hove and Martha Kjerland, was sent to live with her uncle Andrew and wife Johanna at an early age. Some census records mistakenly list her as their biological daughter, but that is inaccurate. In 1911 she became their daughter through adoption, and stayed with them to their respective deaths. Christine was a school teacher at an elementary school in Sioux Falls, SD. After Johanna died in 1912, Christine took care of Andrew. One day in 1927 she came home to him dead in their house from gas fumes from a faulty kitchen stove. I am attempting to get a copy of the adoption record and/or the probate record of Andrew’s will—hoping it will include information about the missing Martha Kjerland.
There is some discrepancy about the exact location of the 1893 wedding service—some records list it as being held at the Silverton church (as the very first wedding held at this church) while another wedding document I have says the ceremony was held at the home of an Aslak Andersen and his wife, officiated by a Rev. Pederson.
